Position Requirements:

• Minimum two years experience teaching ESL
• Strong desire to work with both women and children
• Native English speaker
• Willingness to learn Thai language
• Proven supervisory skills in a team environment
• Strong computer skills, especially e-mail and MS Office
• Demonstrated organizational skills
• Ability to work in fluid and ambiguous situations (i.e. flexible with a good sense of humor)
• Self starter – must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision
• Desire to be a part of a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual team
• Professional references

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience in holistic curriculum design
• Thai language fluency a plus
• Understanding of Trauma Disorders and dynamics of sexual abuse and exploitation
• Exposure to Art Therapy
• Aptitude for learning new programs and procedures quickly
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills -- proven ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment

Position reports to: Director

Job Purpose Summary: The Garden of Hope is looking for a Women’s and Children’s English Program Coordinator. This program hopes to not only equip the women and children with a valuable vocational tool in a tourist-dependent city, but also will serve as a vehicle to enable them to discover their identity and self-worth through a holistic curriculum that includes an art program for creative expression and a curriculum that is written to specifically address the women’s needs.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:

Over-seeing the development and implementation of the Women’s and Children’s ESL program. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Curriculum Design

• Designing an English curriculum designed specifically for at risk and exploited women and children. This target group has many special needs and challenges that are not addressed in traditional ESL programs.
• Designing a curriculum in line with the larger purpose of creating an overall environment of love, trust, safety, healing and empowerment for the women and children.

o Women in our target group are at risk, in, or transitioning out of prostitution. Curriculum must focus on the dignity and self-worth of each individual. The children in our program are from ethnic groups that are disadvantaged in Thai society. They range in age from 4 to 16. The curriculum should be broken down into beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes for kids.

• This curriculum should incorporate art therapy as another means for the women and children to express themselves.
• The Coordinator will be responsible for designing a screening/aptitude intake test to properly place incoming students. In addition, existing reporting and accountability systems will need to be further developed.

Supervisory and Scheduling

• The ESL Coordinator is responsible for the staffing and execution of all English Classes.
• Recruit and train English teachers, volunteers, and interns.
• Communicate with volunteers, teams, and interns prior to their arrival in Thailand as it relates to teaching English.
• Establish and maintain an English class schedule with properly allocated staffing levels.

Engaged participation in all Garden of Hope activities including daily prayer and worship, weekly staff meeting, monthly prayer day, Strategic Planning meetings, and other Garden of Hope group activities.

• Willing to do whatever is required to accomplish Garden of Hope goals (even those that fall outside of the English Program and Women’s Resource Programs).
• Follow all Garden of Hope policies and procedures.

Note: All staff sign their agreement to follow our Child Protection Policy. Each candidate is carefully screened and references checked. Prior to acceptance, each candidate is run through state and national Sex Offender sites. Each candidate must also complete an FBI background check. On site, we have continual video surveillance in all public areas. All classrooms and offices have glass doors to insure transparency and safety. The Garden of Hope is safe place for kids and women, but not for those who want to harm them!
